Edward H.C. Wilson was born on August 6, 1820, on the eastern shore of Maryland. He graduated from Washington and Jefferson College in Pennsylvania at the age of 18. Wilson then began studying law in his native state. He arrived in Michigan in 1845.

Wilson served as Prosecuting Attorney of Hillsdale County for one term and Circuit Judge for two terms. He was appointed to the Michigan Supreme Court in November of 1856 to succeed Warner Wing.
